“MUSICALS WITHOUT MUSIC”

A play by Peter Filichia

A theater poster for 'Musicals Without Music' featuring a smiling yellow comedy mask, a crying blue tragedy mask, and a hand with a finger pressed against a white circle with a red prohibition sign over a musical note.

“Musicals Without Music” explores what happens after the curtain falls and the final note fades. Through a series of sharp, funny sketches, the show follows familiar theatrical characters once their stories are supposedly “over.” These moments take place offstage, after the applause, when life resumes and the neat emotional resolutions promised by musicals no longer apply. With a tone that’s witty, self-aware, and often laugh-out-loud funny, the piece invites audiences to reconsider what comes next when the music stops.

Structurally, the show leans into a sketch-style format—playful and fast-moving, with a sensibility reminiscent of SNL—but grounded in a deep affection for theatre and storytelling. Each vignette offers a fresh perspective on identity, ambition, disappointment, and resilience, revealing how characters grapple with who they are when they’re no longer singing their truth. Humor becomes the entry point, but the emotional stakes linger beneath the surface.

This project aligns closely with Flipping The Script Productions’ mission to tell meaningful stories that challenge expectations and expand the way audiences engage with narrative. By spotlighting the “in-between” moments—those rarely seen but deeply human chapters—Musicals Without Music reframes familiar tropes into something honest, surprising, and resonant. It’s a celebration of storytelling that embraces complexity, invites reflection, and reminds us that every ending is really just another beginning.
