Emerging Female Voices & the FTSP Mission

Dear Friends of Flipping The Script Productions,

I hope this message finds you well.

Recently, I came across an insightful article in The Daily Beast titled "Female Playwrights Are Finally Taking Over Broadway Stages." The piece highlights the increasing prominence of female voices in theater, a development that resonates deeply with our mission.

It highlights not only the growing number of women playwrights but the related emergence of strong and nuanced female characters, from Sunset Boulevard’s Norma Desmond to the dynamic duo in The Roommate - Mia Farrow and Patti Lupone.

And the shift isn’t just on Broadway - like any real transformation, it begins at the roots. Women are being increasingly involved in Off-Broadway productions, bringing new and refreshing stories that directly relate to their mostly female audiences.

One playwright featured is Jenny Lyn Bader, a personal friend and esteemed colleague. Her latest work, Mrs. Stern Wanders the Prussian State Library, recently concluded a successful run at the WP Theater. Her show - following the story of a German-American historian who is jailed under suspicion of illegal research - has been hailed by the New York Times as “thought-provoking” and by TheatreScene as “stimulating and suspenseful!”

The reviews are far more than superficial; Bader delivers a poignant, thoughtful, and raw portrayal of Jewish history. She is a testament to the importance of new voices in all artistic spaces, especially in storytelling roles. I urge you to look into the story behind the play.

At Flipping The Script Productions, we are dedicated to amplifying new and diverse voices in theater. In line with this commitment, we are still committed to promoting and producing Melissa Borgeding’s Someone Close To You. Melissa's unique perspective and storytelling prowess exemplify the fresh talent we aim to showcase - and it is clear that the impact of stories like this is beyond measure.

The rise of female playwrights is not just a trend but a cultural shift in the theater world. Women are bringing forth narratives that offer new and nuanced representations, enriching the tapestry of stories on stage. In the words of Dori Berinstein, “Of course, these stories written by women, are going to be different”

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we are flipping the script and embracing the future of theater.

Warm regards,

Stephen Rourke
